No, a Psychiatric Service Dog is a dog that is trained to provide assistance to a person with one of a wide variety of mental health conditions. Visit the ADA's website for answers to FAQs about the ADA and Service Animals.
To qualify for our program, you must provide a letter from your mental health care provider that states:
- You are currently enrolled or will re-enroll in counseling for the duration of our program.
- You have a diagnosis of Military Sexual Trauma (MST) or Sexual Assault-Related Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (SA-PTSD).
- A Service Dog is recommended as part of your overall treatment plan.
- You must give us permission to consult with your mental health care provider.
No, you will join other Survivors in a hands-on class to train your dog.
The program requires a 20-week commitment. That includes 40 hours of professional group training and 250 hours of documented training completed away from class.
Our program is free to qualified applicants, but a $500 deposit is required for dog adoption. Once you and the dog complete the program, the $500 is refunded to you.
All our funding comes from generous donors who believe in our mission.
Service Dog Strong is an all-volunteer organization, please fill out the contact form if you would like to learn more about volunteering.
Our hands-on training requires a 20-week commitment with a weekly group training class once a week in the greater Portland area.
All applicants, including those with four legs, must be screened for our program. Service Dog Strong is committed to adopting rescue dogs for our program, but if you have a dog that passes the screening requirements, you may join the program together.
